ONLINE EVENT: Money in Politics – Tackling Corruption and Organized Crime in Latin America and the Caribbean
This post is also available in: Spanish
Illegal contributions to political parties and campaigns have become one of the most common methods for purchasing political influence and corrupting national and sub-national officials across all branches of government. This trend is increasingly worsened by the direct involvement of organized crime groups. To curb the illicit influence of money in politics, it is essential to establish clear standards to limit, monitor, and transparently report private financial contributions to political parties, elections, and public initiatives. Equally important is the need to address the obstacles hindering the implementation of these regulations.
Join the Dialogue’s Rule of Law Program and International IDEA on Thursday, October 17, 2024, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM EDT, for a virtual panel discussion on the implications of uncontrolled levels of money in politics for the rule of law and democracy in Latin America and the Caribbean. In which key areas does money influence politics, and how? To what extent are democratic institutions prepared and capable of regulating this phenomenon? What strategies can improve the traceability of money in politics? How does the expansion of organized crime affect politics, and what lessons can be learned from countries where its influence is significant? Why is limited transparency in regulating political funding problematic for the private sector, and how can business leaders play a role in strengthening regulations?
