Pierre Pettigrew served Canada as minister of foreign affairs, minister of international trade, minister of health, minister of intergovernmental affairs, and minister responsible for official languages. He is currently executive advisor international at Deloitte Canada. Pettigrew has led a distinguished career with success in both the public and private sectors. Prior to his government service, he worked as an international business consultant with Deloitte for 10 years, emerging as a strong voice for business and as an articulate analyst for GATT, World Trade Organization (WTO), and North American free trade negotiations in the media. Pettigrew’s visibility on international trade issues garnered an appointment to the federal cabinet prior to his 1996 election to parliament. As a minister, Pettigrew chaired several working groups on tough international trade negotiations and led trade missions to China, India, Russia, Germany, Algeria, Morocco, South Africa, Nigeria, Mexico, and elsewhere. One of his crowning achievements was leading the nationally and globally lauded international policy review that provided the government of Canada with a fully integrated approach of diplomacy, defense, trade, and development in international affairs.

In acknowledgement of his many notable achievements and contributions in politics, public service, and international business, and trade, the University of Warwick has recognized Pettigrew with an honorary doctorate of law. Pettigrew holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières and a master’s of philosophy in international relations from Balliol College at Oxford University in England. He is the author of The New Politics of Confidence, a book on globalization and the art of governing.

Pettigrew joined the Dialogue as a Member in 2008.
