Edwin Carrington served as secretary general of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) from 1992 to 2010 and is currently ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary of Trinidad and Tobago to the organization. During his tenure as secretary general, Carrington oversaw the inclusion of Suriname and Haiti as member states as well as the establishment of the Caribbean Court of Justice, the Caribbean Community Climate Change Center, and the Regional Organization for Standards and Quality. Carrington is the recipient of many distinguished awards. He had been decorated by the governments of Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, Belize, Suriname, and Spain. He has also been knighted by the government of Antigua and Barbuda and named a national icon of Trinidad and Tobago.
Carrington holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from London University as well as a master’s degree in economics from the University of the West Indies. He pursued advanced studies in economics at McGill University in Canada and has been awarded numerous honorary degrees.
Carrington is currently on leave from the Dialogue while he serves as ambassador.
